Tesla's (TSLA) Musk Lends Knowledge to Help Solve Boeing's (BA) Battery Problem

January 29, 2013 8:12 AM EST
Boeing's (NYSE: BA) recent battery problems has the aircraft giant looking beyond its own walls for possible solutions. And what better place to start than with tech entrepreneur Elon Musk.

Musk, who is CEO at Tesla Motors (Nasdaq: TSLA) as well as SpaceX, posted a message on Twitter the other day that he is in talks with Boeing's chief 787 engineer Mike Sinnett over potential solutions to the issue. He thinks Boeing might be able to use similar batteries as to what SpaceX is using.

SpaceX uses high-capacity lithium-ion battery packs in its rockets and other spacecraft, Musk commented to Reuters. He noted that the batteries are subject to higher loads than commercial aircraft, all while having to function from sea level to the vacuum of space.

Reuters also points out that the 787 Dreamliner uses a lithium cobalt oxide chemistry, which is akin to the make-up of Tesla's Roadster batteries.

Ahead of the bell Tuesday, both Tesla and Boeing are indicated higher.
