Are Ultrabooks already on the way out?
Generally priced at or above $1,000 each, Ultrabooks have never really grained a strong hold on the computing public. The devices are more like glorified netbooks: minimalist and svelte, yet powerful enough to run the tough programs. The addition of notebooks with touchscreens -- from makers like ASUStek and Acer -- and stronger tablets have also ebbed interest.
Here's another bit of information that should make Dell (Nasdaq: DELL) and Hewlett-Packard (NYSE: HPQ) investors take pause: Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) might be coming out with a more powerful MacBook Air in 2013, cutting the prices of current models in the meantime.
According to Digitimes, Apple is already getting quotes for revisions to its MacBook Pro and MacBook Air line for June 2013. Specifically, the MacBook Air will have a stronger processor, but design cues will remain the same.
To clear inventory, Apple is likely to drop the price of current MacBook Air models, taking away from Ultrabook demand.
Digitimes cautions that shipments of MacBook notebooks will hit about 17 million units in 2013, though sales might not hit the same level.
Shares of Apple are lower Friday morning.
