Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) was granted a patent covering different types of SIM card insertion, according to a filing made on Tuesday.
The patent was previously mentioned by PatentlyApple. The following is the abstract from the app:
"Connectors that may allow SIM cards to be easily removed and replaced, may be resistant to damage by an improper insertion of a SIM card, and may provide reliable mechanical performance. One example may provide a plunger system where a user can push on a plunger rod and eject a SIM card. Another example may provide contacts that are not damaged by improper insertion of a SIM card. Another example may provide a plastic housing, the housing reinforced by a metallic shield and having a relatively uniform thickness."
It's not a life-changing patents, but as intellectual property wars continue to rage and more and more companies garnering revenue from licensing fees, any additions will aid Apple.
This type of setup might be used in future iPhone and iPad production, expanding Apple's reach further into expanding markets. In areas like Southeast Asia and India, users generally carry around multiple SIM cards to switch carriers and get the best rates. Making insertion and removal of said SIM cards could play in Apple's favor moving forward.
Apple shares are down 1.3 percent today
