Baidu (BIDU), Sohu (SOHU) Launch Siri-Like Apps to Regain Relevance

December 26, 2012 8:21 AM EST
"Siri, what is the strongest competition you face in China. Over."

According to TechInAsia, Baidu (Nasdaq: BIDU) and Sohu's (Nasdaq: SOHU) Sogou are launching versions of Apple's (Nasdaq: AAPL) Siri voice-controlled search assistant. The apps -- Baidu Voice Assistant and Sogou Voice Assistant -- will launch for Google's (Nasdaq: GOOG) Android operating system out of the gate.

Baidu is the leading search engine in China, while Sogou is the third largest and controls just 7.8 percent\ of the market.

The user interface (UI) looks more like Google Now than Apple's Siri. Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) has been making progress in expanding its Chinese market presence, though some users still report having trouble with Siri with speaking in Mandarin or Cantonese.

Baidu and Sohu shares are flat in early trading Wednesday.
