How much were Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) users hankering for a good mapping application on iOS? Real long, it seems.
GigaOm noted this morning that Google's (Nasdaq: GOOG) Google Maps app quickly moved to the top of the free app list for iPhone. That comes merely hours after Google made the announcement late Wednesday.
Exact numbers related to how many downloads were made aren't available, but the quick rises emphasizes the demand.
Shares of Apple are reacting somewhat as expected, down 1.2 percent on the session. Notably, Nokia Corp. (NYSE: NOK), which aimed to offer an alternative to Apple's map app in September, is also lower as its now even more unlikely that its app will be the go-to to supplement users' map needs.
