Google's (GOOG) Larry Page Comments on Apple (AAPL) Relationship... or Lack Thereof

The Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL)/Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) rivalry has been one for the ages after it was thrust into the spotlight when the late Steve Jobs said he would go to "thermonuclear war" with Google over what he called "grand theft" perpetuated by Google's android operating system.

Today, in a rare interview with Fortune, Google's CEO Larry Page commented on the relationship with Apple.

Answering a question on if his relationship with Steve Jobs was friendly, Page said it was "at times."

On a question about if he stands by comments attributed to him that Apple's response to android was 'for show', Page said he believes it was "partly." Page said he wouldn't conduct himself in the same way. "That's something I try not to do," Page said. "I don't like to rally my company in that way because I think that if you're looking at somebody else, you're looking at what they do now, and that's not how again you stay two or three steps ahead."

On the current state of the relationship with Apple, which btw is still a huge distribution partner, Page said "it would be nice if everybody would get along better and the users didn't suffer as a result." That said, Page said they continue to talk.

"I mean, obviously we talk to Apple. We have a big search relationship with Apple, and so on, and we talk to them and so on."
