Shares of Facebook (Nasdaq: FB) and Nokia Oyj (NYSE: NOK) are both active in early trading Monday following a news release earlier that the two would collaborate over a new Facebook button on Nokia's Asha 205 device line, which includes both single and dual SIM models.
Though Nokia has been berated for slinging just 2.9 million Lumia devices last quarter, the Asha line sold over two-times more, to 6.5 million devices. The Asha line is based on Nokai's "Series 40" operating system, of which it noted that there are over 675 million "current users" globally.
Director, Technology Marketing, of Nokia’s Mobile Phones division Neil Broadley told TechCrunch that the decision to place the first dedicated button on the Asha 205 was through a joint collaboration with Facebook. He says the two work "very closely" in looking at the opportunities that Nokia has.
The handsets run $62 each, which is down $10 from the previous Asha 201 model.
Overall, the move should be a boon for both firms. Facebook has over 1 billion users at last check, meaning the market is ripe for those that want to access Facebook more quickly. On the other hand, Nokia will be one of the more major players in emerging markets with a low-cost, Facebook-friendly device (Orange and Vodafone (Nasdaq: VOD) have also launched Facebook-buttoned devices recently).
While Facebook is up in early action, Nokia appears a little pressured.
