Samsung Said to Charge Apple (AAPL) 20%+ More for Mobile Chips

November 12, 2012 9:21 AM EST
Litigation between Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) and Samsung has been going on for a while. The feud just may be pushing Samsung's patience to the limits.

According to reports out Monday, Samsung has jacked the prices up on processor chips it supplies to Apple by 20 percent. After shopping around, Apple found that it had to swallow the prices given that no other firm would be able to manufacture the specific processors.

Investors might want to keep an eye on Apple Monday. The company bought about 130 million mobile device processors from Samsung in 2011, with that number already over 200 million chips in 2012.

The contract between Samsung and Apple expires in 2014.

By then, Apple might already be making its own mobile processor chips. Last week, headlines had Apple looking to divert away from Intel (Nasdaq: INTC) for Mac chips. Should Apple follow-through, it might be a simpler conversion to start popping-out other types of chips as well.

Into the open, apple is up 0.8 percent Monday.
