May 31, 2011 8:54 AM EDT
Alternative energy stocks are getting a bit of a kick this morning following reports that Germany will shutter all nuclear plants in the country by 2022.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel's ruling coalition said it planned to cut power use 10 percent by 2020, aiming to further use renewable energy sources like wind and solar.

The move comes following the March 11th earthquake near Japan which led to a meltdown at the Fukushima nuclear plant.

Merkel's proposal has Germany taking 8 of 17 plants offline now, and the balance by 2021.

Nuclear power accounts for about 23 percent of Germany's power, according to the WSJ.
