eBay (NASDAQ: EBAY) Active on Chatter.
UPDATE: The chatter suggests that Google (NASDAQ: GOOG) will take a 40% stake in the company to combat Apple's ApplePay and Alibaba's Alipay, with Carl Icahn pushing for the deal.
SI NOTE: While Carl Icahn is big in the stock and has unsuccessfully pushed for a spin-off of PayPal, it is clear the company needs to do something. However, today's rumors are coming from questionable sources and would appear highly unlikely. Shares are now up 3%.
Here's the rumor post that was going around trading desks and chat rooms earlier (source unknown):
EBAY pos+
GOOGL to announce a 40% stake in Ebay in a deal valued at $85blln-$68/sh. Icahn pushed for the marriage of the two as a way to strengthen Paypal with applePay and Alipay around the corner and to position GOOGL to better compete with AMZN and Alibaba in e-commerce. Source within the matter stated that EBAY wanted to wait for the detail of Apple Pay to become public before announcing.
