China's Competitor to Microsoft (MSFT) Windows Could Debut in October

Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) is on watch Monday following news over the weekend that China's competitor to the Windows operating system will debut within a few months.

China's Xinhua commented on Sunday that China's homegrown operating system (OS) could be ready by October. Ni Guangnan of the Chinese Academy of Engineering told the People's Post and Telecommunications News that the OS will be first seen on desktop devices and later expanded to smartphones and other mobile devices, according to the report.

The OS still has some problems, funding is running low, and more developer cohesion is needed before a final product makes its was to the public.

The Chinese government earlier this year voiced concerns about security behind Windows, saying it would stop using the platform after support for Windows XP ended.

Shares of Microsoft are up 0.4 percent early.
