Facebook, Inc. (Nasdaq: FB) shares are lower today on heavy volume following news that one social media peer might also be looking to get a front-row spot on users' Android-based smartphones.
It was announced earlier that Twitter (NYSE: TWTR) acquired Cover. Cover provides a lockscreen for Android which allows users to customize what is seen and when it is seen. Facebook Home is a similar device that the company is continuing to develop after initial take was rather poor.
With a slew of apps in the marketplace, owning the lockscreen is a key way to get your app/company front-and-center with a large userbase. It's not clear what Twitter and Cover will be doing moving forward, though Cover will remain in the Google Play store for now.
Shares of Facebook are down about 1.8 percent while Twitter is modestly higher Monday.
