Microsoft's (MSFT) Swype-Like WP 8.1 Keyboard Breaks Guinness Record for Speed (GOOG) (AAPL)

April 7, 2014 7:36 AM EDT

While Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) and Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) have long dominated the mobile environment, Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) might become a serious contender as the rest of 2014 plays out.

Microsoft unveiled Windows Phone 8.1 last week at its annual Build Conference, grabbing the markets attention in the process. While much of the focus has been on the company's Siri-fighter, Cortana, there was another bit of interesting news that is bolstering the argument for getting a WP8.1-equipped device: Word Flow.

Microsoft's answer for Swype, Word Flow broke a Guinness World Record for fastest on-screen keyboard. The record requires the user to type out The razor-toothed piranhas of the genera Serrasalmus and Pygocentrus are the most ferocious freshwater fish in the world. In reality they seldom attack humans as quickly as possible. Even using a traditional PC keyboard, that sentence is a hand full. Literally. Word Flow got the job done in 18.43 seconds. Guinness World Records said other platforms did the same job in 18.53 to 35.54 seconds.

Release of WP8.1 devices is slated for April 14th.

We've embedded the record-breaking video below. Microsoft stock is lower in early trading.
