Microsoft (MSFT) Moves to Acquire Its Own VR Technology (FB)

March 27, 2014 2:10 PM EDT
Facebook (Nasdaq: FB) isn't the only company looking to make a splash in virtual reality.

TechCrunch reports that Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) paid anywhere from $100 to $150 million to acquire certain Osterhout Design Group assets.

Rumors of the deal first cropped up last September and were confirmed to TC by OSG founder, Ralph Osterhout.

In the deal, which closed last November, Microsoft gained control of 81 patents. Specifics of what the intellectual property covered weren't speculated.

What is speculated is where Microsoft might use VR technology. The most logical answer would be its gaming segment and the Xbox console in particular. Coupled with the Kinect device, a VR set would be an incredibly immersive and (potentially) cost-friendly experience for the user.

Shares of Microsoft are down 0.9 percent Thursday.
