H-P (HPQ) Plans 3-D Printer Announcement for June (DDD) (SSYS)

March 20, 2014 8:55 AM EDT
Hewlett-Packard (NYSE: HPQ) is expected to make a move into 3-D printing, but investors aren't likely to hear more about it until June.

Reuters noted that H-P CEO Meg Whitman told investors at the company's annual shareholders meeting that H-P will make a big technology announcement during that month. Whitman noted that internal researchers were able to solve issues related to quality of substrates used in the 3-D printing process, which can affect durability of finished products.

H-P sees the market for 3-D printers and related software growing from $2.2 billion in 2012 up to $11 billion by 2021.

While commercial 3-D printing is where the money is, companies like Stratasys (Nasdaq: SSYS) have moved into the consumer segment with acquisitions and new products. The technology is still relatively immature and expensive with vast limitations, but as costs come down and product quality improves it's likely that more and more consumer level printers should pop-up in homes around the world sometime soon.

Shares of H-P are positive early Thursday. On watch are 3-D printing companies like Stratasys, 3D Systems (NYSE: DDD), ExOne (Nasdaq: XONE), and voxeljet AG (NYSE: VJET).
