Tesla (TSLA) Partners with Israeli Firm for 'Driverless' Cars

February 12, 2014 2:57 PM EST
Tesla Motors (Nasdaq: TSLA) might be able to meet its goal of a mostly-automatic car by 2016.

According to Israeli news source Haaretz, Jerusalem-based vehicle safety systems manufacturer Mobileye and Tesla have entered a partnership with the goal being to develop a driverless car.

Mobileye's system uses five cameras -- one on the front and back of the vehicle and two on each side -- which would sync with the auto's navigation system. The platform allows cars to switch lanes in urban environments, maintain the center of a lane, and keep a safe distance from other drivers, amid other features.

In the past, Tesla CEO Elon Musk said that the company would have a 95 percent driverless car by 2016 and that 100 percent automation is difficult to achieve.

Mobileye founder Amnon Shashua also said that the system wouldn't be fully automated, but would allow the driver time to check a text message, change the radio, and do other tasks which would normally divert attention from the road for a short time.

Other competitors in the automatic automobile market include General Motors (NYSE: GM), Daimler's Mercedes Benz, Elbit (Nasdaq: ESLT), and Google (Nasdaq: GOOG).

Shares of Tesla are down 0.5 percent.
