Microsoft (MSFT) WP Shipments Improved 60% in Q4 as Apple (AAPL) Faded

Microsoft's (Nasdaq: MSFT) Windows Phone platform showed strong growth in Q413.

According to the latest data from Strategy Analytics, the Microsoft mobile operating system saw shipments of 9.4 million units in the latest quarter, good for 3.2 percent of the global smartphone market. The number compares with shipments of 5.9 million units for 2.7 percent market share in the same period last year.

For the end of 2013, Windows Phone shipments totaled 35.7 million units, from 18.8 percent in 2012. Market share at the end of 2013 was 3.6 percent for Windows Phone.

Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) Android saw shipments rise 62 percent in 2013 to 781.2 million units, with market share of 78.9 percent.

Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) iPhone shipments improved 13 percent to 153.4 million units, capturing 15.5 percent of the market in the process. Notably, Apple's market share was 19.4 percent at the end of 2012.
