3-D Printers on Watch as New, Low-Cost Competitor Enters Market (DDD) (SSYS) (VJET)

3-D printing stocks are on watch Wednesday as the 2014 CES in Las Vegas continues to roll ahead.

One point that might rattle investors is competition in the 3-D printing space. While 3D Systems (NYSE: DDD) had a slew of product offerings and debuts this year, overseas players are still looking to make a dent in the market.

XYZprinting unveiled a sub-$500 3-D printer at CES this week. The $499 da Vinci is designed for small households and businesses, also offering safety features and an open-source database.

The da Vinci is also an out-of-the-box, plug-and-play printer, with no assembly required. It has a 7.8 x 7.8 x 7.8-inch printing space, which some say is large for the price point. The device also encloses its printing area to protect users from hot temps required in the 3-D printing process and also to keep material inside the print chamber.

More can be read at PC Mag here.

Along with 3D Systems, Stratasys (Nasdaq: SSYS), voxeljet (NYSE: VJET), and ExOne (Nasdaq: XONE) are also on watch. None currently offers a comparable 3-D printer that is close to the da Vinci's price.
