T-Mobile US (NYSE: TMUS) is said to be taking a hard look at acquiring spectrum from rival Verizon (NYSE: VZ).

Reuters said Tuesday that T-Mobile might purchase the assets to expand its current capacity. Negotiations between the two parties are said to still be in early stages and a deal might not ultimately be reached.

Citing recent analyst commentary, Reuters noted that T-Mobile might pay up to $3 billion for the spectrum, which is currently not being used by Verizon Wireless.

As T-Moible continues its Uncarrier campaign, the company is looking to shore-up its networks as data loads increase. The company is currently the number four U.S. carrier behind larger rivals Sprint, Verizon, and AT&T (NYSE: T).

Shares of T-Mobile are down 0.2 percent in afternoon trading.
