Amazon.com (AMZN) Beats Wal-mart (WMT), Others in Prelim. Holiday Pricing (TGT) (SHLD)

November 18, 2013 3:09 PM EST
With the holidays getting into full-swing starting in a week or two, online retailers are pulling out (most) of the stops in the escalating price wars.

Today, in an usual turn of events, Bloomberg report that Amazon.com (Nasdaq: AMZN) actually has lower prices than peers Wal-mart (NYSE: WMT) and Target (NYSE: TGT) on children's toys.

Excluding those from thrid-party sellers, Amazon's prices were about 3 percent cheaper on a basket of 87 toys. Inclusive of Marketplace vendors, Wal-mart was cheaper by about 1.2 points. Wal-mart was lower than target by 2.4 percent, Sears' (Nasdaq: SHLD) Kmart by 5 percent, and Toys 'R' Us by about 7.2 percent, on average.

Generally, the November - December selling period accounts for about 20 percent to 40 percent of retailers' take for the year.

Why the move is unusual is because its been speculated that Amazon is slowing ratcheting prices higher as consumers become more used to the site for purchases. Today's data shows that rumor might not hold as much water as the market thinks.

It wasn't made clear whether shipping costs were factored in to the survey, which was conducted by Bloomberg Industries.

Shares of Amazon are down 0.4 percent.
