Nike (NYSE: NKE) closed lower Tuesday amid debuting its revamped like of FuelBand.
One thing that was not included with the latest FuelBand is support for Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) Android...which only has about 80 percent global smartphone market share. Instead, the device will continue to focus on Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) iOS and desktop
One exec for Nike tried to justify the move, commenting to CNET,
Nike made similar claims in 2012. Android is clearly something that should have been evaluated by now.
CNET speculates that the next-generation FuelBand connects with Bluetooth 4.0, something that Android hasn't put support un for save for version 4.3. Apples iPhone 4S and up have all had support for the connection.
Also, FuelBand has largely been a North American product where the ratio of Apple devices is much higher.
Others might make the argument that those on iOS are more
Ultimately, Nike isn't a software/hardware company, though some might beg to differ at this point. If the company can get you moving more, then you might find a greater need for more sweatpants or you might go through your gym shoes a little quicker, and turn back to Nike when you need those items replaced.
Nike ended Tuesday down 0.5 percent.
