Nokia (NOK) Said to Appoint New China Chief as Sales Slump Continues

May 8, 2013 9:18 AM EDT
As Nokia (NYSE: NOK) looks for a stronger presence in China, it has appointed a new operational head in the region.

Digitimes reports that Eirk Bertman will become the new manager of Nokia China. He'll be replacing Gustavo Eichelmann, whom is resigning for personal reasons.

Nokia sales in China have fallen 56 percent as of its most recent quarter, while shipment volume is down 63 percent. China also made up just 9 percent of Nokia sales in Q1, versus 17 percent the prior year.

Digitimes also noted that Lumia devices aren't competing well with higher-end Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) Android smartphones in terms of hardware specs.

Nokia is up in early trading.
