Tit for Tat: Apple (AAPL) Users Spend the Most, iOS has Best Retention (GOOG) (BBRY)

January 30, 2013 12:09 PM EST
Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) may see somewhat of a slowdown in sales for its iPhone and iPad offerings, but it remains one of the more lucrative bets for carriers.

According to data out of Consumer Intelligence Research Partners (CIRP), about 59 percent of iOS users rack up monthly carrier bills of $100 or more. The data show that 49 percent of users have a bill from $101 to $200 per month, while 10 percent are above $200.

Comparably, about 53 percent of Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) Android users have bills in the same brackets, with another 32 percent in the $51 to $100 range (versus 36 percent for iOS).

BlackBerry (Nasdaq: BBRY)(Nasdaq: RIMM) costs were more spread out, with 60 percent ranging from $51 to $200 per month. Of total smartphone operating systems, BlackBerry reported the highest number of users with bills from under $25 to $50 per month.

So, it appears that the large subsidies that Verizon (NYSE: VZ), AT&T (NYSE: T), and others pay for the privilege of carrying the iPhone really do balance out with total revenue per user over the long run.

More BlackBerry users veer over to iOS when making a switch, the survey also showed. According to the data, about 59 percent of BlackBerry users become iOS users when switching, versus 32 percent for Android. Just 7 percent of BlackBerry users stick with the operating system on the next go around.

For all operating systems, iOS had the best user retention at 88 percent, while Android boasted 64 percent retention.

It should be noted that details of when the survey took place and how many respondents there were weren't immediately available.

BlackBerry shares are down about 8 percent Wednesday.
