3D Systems (DDD), Stratasys (SSYS) to Benefit as Smartphone Maker Moves into Custom Cases

January 18, 2013 8:07 AM EST
3D Systems Corp (NYSE: DDD) and Stratasys, Ltd. (Nasdaq: SSYS) might be headed higher today on a bit of news in the 3-D printing space from an unlikely source.

Earlier today, Nokia Corp. (NYSE: NOK) made a blog post about 3-D printing. Nokia didn't just comment on the technology, but lauded the technology.

Oh, and Nokia is issuing templates for users to be able to print out their own, customized Lumia 820 case.

You can take a look at the full post for more information, but here's a few quotes from Nokia Community & Developer Marketing Manager John Kneeland:
  • "Nokia’s 3D printing community project is a simple concept with exciting potential. Our Lumia 820 has a removable shell that users can replace with Nokia-made shells in different colors, special ruggedized shells with extra shock and dust protection, and shells that add wireless charging capabilities found in the high-end Lumia 920 to the mid-range 820."

  • "In doing this, Nokia has become the first major phone company to begin embracing the 3D printing community and its incredible potential, and continue to be the leading phone company in this exciting field."

  • "...a rich, vibrant ecosystem isn’t just a matter of apps and services; it’s also hardware—physical things that enhance and personalize your experience with your phone."

Nokia is lower Friday while 3D Systems and Stratasys are both indicated higher.
