Monster Beverage (MNST) Issues Statement on Anais Fournier Death

October 22, 2012 4:36 PM EDT
Monster Beverage (Nasdaq: MNST) issued a statement after a mother filed a suit against the company after her 14-year-old daughter passed away due to "a heart arrhythmia after drinking large cans of Monster Energy on two consecutive days." She alleges that Monster failed to warn about the risks of its energy drinks.

"Monster Beverage Corporation is saddened by the untimely passing of Anais Fournier and its sympathies go out to her family. Over the past 16 years Monster has sold more than 8 billion energy drinks which have been safely consumed worldwide. Monster does not believe that its beverages are in any way responsible for the death of Ms. Fournier. Monster is unaware of any fatality anywhere that has been caused by its drinks. The Fournier family has chosen to file a lawsuit, which Monster intends to vigorously defend and, in light of such pending litigation, Monster's policy is to not comment further."

Shares of Monster Beverage were clobbered 14 percent on Wall Street Monday.
