Pandit's Early Holiday Gift to Citi (C) Investors: His Retirement

Hear that? That's the sound of millions of Citigroup (NYSE: C) investors high-fiving all at once.

Earlier Tuesday, Citi CEO Vikram Pandit announced he would be stepping down. The news came as a shock to many, with Pandit giving no prior indication that be would leaving.

Investors will note the following facts about Pandit's reign, as compiled from Bloomberg data:
  • Shares of Citi are down 89 percent since Pandit took over in December 2007;

  • The S&P is down 5 percent since then; and

  • S&P Financials are down about 50 percent.
Comparably, Bank of America (NYSE: BAC) is down 80 percent over the same period, Wells Fargo (NYSE: WFC) is off 80 percent, Morgan Stanley (NYSE: MS) is 67 percent lower, and Goldman Sachs (NYSE: GS) is off 44 percent over the same time frame.

Ahead of the bell Tuesday, Citi is down about 1.3 percent.
