NFL's Hurry-Up Offense Patches Ref Controversy

September 27, 2012 9:09 AM EDT
Days after a controversial touchdown call, the NFL reached an 8-year deal with NFL Referees Association Wednesday night. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said the refs will be back on the field starting Thursday night.

"We look forward to having the finest officials in sports back on the field, and I want to give a special thanks to NFL fans for their passion. Now it's time to put the focus back on the teams and players where it belongs," Goodell.

The ref controversy drew criticism from fans in all quarters of the country, including the White House. And the NFL isn't the only company with skin in the game. Nevada's multi-billion sports betting operations can also be affected by controversial ref calls. This affects companies like Las Vegas Sands (NYSE: LVS) and MGM (NYSE: MGM). And reports said broadcasters – Walt Disney (NYSE: DIS), Comcast (Nasdaq: CMCSA), CBS (NYSE: CBS) - had smoke coming out of their ears after Monday's controversy touchdown call.

Considering the billions at stake, it is no surprise Goodell sent in the hurry-up offense to patch up the deal.
