Retailers Could Have Impressive Holiday Sales on First Traffic Gain in 5 Years

September 12, 2012 11:58 AM EDT
Macy's (NYSE: M), Kohl's (NYSE: KSS), Dillard's (NYSE: DDS), and other retailers might have a fantastic holiday shopping season, according to new data from ShopperTrak.

The data firm suggests that sales for the holiday season could rise 3.3 percent on what is expected to be the first increase in store traffic since 2007. Specifically, foot traffic is expected to rise 2.8 percent from November through December.

ShopperTrak also noted that retail sales have been up year-over-year for the last 34 of 35 months with traffic trend improving since President's Day in February.

In addition, ShopperTrak expects that consumers will be more relaxed about browsing stores and seeing what's available, compared to having a list and doing a mad dash in and out of stores.

Overall, retailers are up on the session, with names like Macy's, Sears (Nasdaq: SHLD), and Bon-Ton (Nasdaq: BONT) showing some robust gains.
