Nomura Securities on American Retail: Healthy Start for Back-To-School

Analyst, Paul Lejuez, said, "Based on our checks, we believe that August trends have accelerated from July. Several retailers reported a strong start to BTS and/or gave strong August comp guidance during earnings calls (American Eagle (NYSE: AEO), Nordstrom (NYSE: JWN), Limited (NYSE: LTD), Ross Stores (Nasdaq: ROST), TJX Co's (NYSE: TJX)), with some citing a boost from later school openings and tax free holidays."

"Our checks indicate that Coach's (NYSE: COH) (do not report monthly) launch of its new Legacy collection has been successful in the full-price channel, with some stores indicating strong sell-throughs in multiple styles and colors. In the Factory channel, 30% off coupons have returned consistently, helping to drive sales and traffic. At Gap Inc (NYSE: GPS), colored bottoms (denim and khaki) continue to sell well for both men and women. At Limited (NYSE: LTD) (VSS), new products such as the Amazing Bra are lifting sales as well."

Top Picks: JWN and AEO
