Caris & Company's Linda Bolton Weiser issued a research note Thursday afternoon which considers a couple of possibilities related to the rumors Bill Ackman's Pershing Square is building a new position in P&G (NYSE: PG).

Bolton believes Ackman will push for the ouster of CEO Bob McDonald, but pointed out the company has no obvious internal replacement and doesn't hire outside CEOs.

Bolton said she is not convinced a split-up of the company's units would immediately create any shareholder value. She instead suggested cost-cutting measures could be ramped up over the near term until long-term efforts begin to take hold.

Caris & Co. maintains an Average rating and $62 price target on shares of P&G amid the chatter.

P&G's stock is up more than 4 percent to $63.97 at last check.
