Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) shares are trading modestly lower Wednesday morning despite more positive news related to the launch of its next-generation operating system.
According to Digitimes, Microsoft already has a slew of OEM lining up to debut x86-based tablet PCs in October 2012, commensurate with the launch of Windows 8. Companies vying to be first include Hewlett-Packard (NYSE: HPQ), Dell (Nasdaq: DELL), Lenovo, Acer, and Asustek Computer.
Of the total, Samsung Electronics, Sony (NYSE: SNE), Toshiba, Lenovo, Acer and Asustek are expected to launch Windows 8 on ARM (Nasdaq: ARMH) in early 2013.
Digitimes also said its sources suggest Nokia (NYSE: NOK) could launch a 10-inch Windows-on-ARM (WOA) tablet in November 2012.
The x86-based tablets will have an advantage over WOA devices in that x86 already has a complete supply chain.
