Apple (AAPL) Unveils New iPad, Apple TV; No Big Surprises Announced

Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) unveiled a number of new items at its highly-anticipated March 7th event in San Francisco, including a new iPad and a new Apple TV set-top box. While the stock is now bouncing modestly, shares pushed lower as most of the details on the iPad were largely expected. Shares of Apple last traded at $531.50, up about 0.2 percent for the session.

The new iPad will be available on March 16th, with the pricing scheme as follows:
  • $499 for 16GB version;
  • $599 for 32GB version;
  • $699 for 64GB version;
  • $629 for 16GB 4G version;
  • $729 for 32GB 4G version, and
  • $829 for 64GB 4G version.
The device has a 9.7 inch screen and includes the same retina display as Apple's iPhone 4. The device's chip has been confirmed as an A5X quad-core processor.

The new iPad will be equipped with a 5megapixel backside-illuminated camera coined the "iSight." A new feature, "iPhoto" will be available on the device, starting at $4.99. The new iPad also comes with a microphone, meaning the new iPad will do voice dictation for emails, etc.

Battery life will span about 10 hours, or about 9 hours while in 4G mode.

The price of the iPad 2 has been lowered by $100 to $399 for the 16GB wifi version.

Apple's newest Apple TV device will support 1080p and features a so-called "streamlined" UI. The latest edition will continue to offer Netflix (Nasdaq: NFLX) and Youtube, to name a few.
