Notable ETF Movers of the Day 03/07: (XHB) (XLK) (GLD) Higher; (VXX) (UNG) Lower
Gainers
- SPDR Series Trust SPDR Homebuilders (NYSE: XHB) up 2.02 percent to $19.68. Homebuilders moving higher Wednesday on the strength of ADP data ahead of the bell, and a revised-higher productivity number for the fourth-quarter of 2011. Notable strength is coming from Lowe's (NYSE: LOW) and Lennar, (NYSE: LEN), which are up 2.7 percent and 3.4 percent on the session.
The Labor Department reported a revised 0.9 percent gain in productivity for Q411, from 0.7 percent reported prior and the Street's estimate of 0.8 percent.
ADP showed the addition of 216,000 payrolls, beating views calling for 215,000.
- SPDR Select Sector Fund - Technology (NYSE: XLK) up 0.70 percent to $28.74. The ETF is being led higher by Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) today, as it is expected to unveil its new iPad tablet, dubbed the iPad 3 by the media. Apple is up about 0.7 percent on the session,
- SPDR Gold Trust (NYSE: GLD) up 0.65 percent to $163.76. Gold making a pop today on the weaker dollar as risk is back on for many investors following 2012s worst trading day on Tuesday, which saw markets end the session about 1.5 percent lower overall. Gold is up $14.3 to $1,686.4 per ounce on the Comex.
- iPath S&P 500 VIX Short Term Fund (NYSE: VXX) down 3.46 percent to $25.13. The CBOE VIX near-term index is lower on the session on ADP and productivity data, the Apple event, and Greece nearing a bond swap deal.
With 90 percent needed by Thursday afternoon, Greece said about 46 percent of private debtholders have agreed to a deal which would see them lose about 53 percent of their holdings face value.
- United States Natural Gas Fund (NYSE: UNG) down 1.39 percent to $18.40. No surprise here, our patented "lick-finger-and-put-up-in-air" weather forecasting strategy tells us its warm outside, which is unusual for early March in the Midwest. Nat gas April contracts are off $.039 to $2.317 per ounce on the Comex.
