Sprint (S) to Carry Apple's (AAPL) iPhone 5 in October; Shares Rip

August 23, 2011 3:38 PM EDT
Sprint (NYSE: S) may have just been given the golden goose.

Shares of the mobile carrier ripped higher this afternoon, following reports the Sprint will be carrying the next Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) mobile device: the iPhone 5.

Only Verizon (NYSE: VZ) and AT&T (NYSE: T) are currently carrying the device in the U.S., and Verizon's only had it since early 2011. The exuberance may be premature; Verizon's had the iPhone since mid-January, and shares are only up about 3.5 percent since then.

Below are headlines from the WSJ:
  • WSJ: Sprint To Get IPhone 5 – Sources
  • WSJ: Sprint, Verizon Wireless And AT&T To Sell IPhone 5 In Mid-Oct – Sources
  • WSJ: Sprint Will Also Sell IPhone 4 At Same Time – Sources
Earlier reports today had the iPhone 5 being a "world phone," being both CDMA and GSM comparable. This could be a benefit for those business travelers who were previously apprehensive about getting the device.

We'll update as we find out more on the report.

Sprint shares are 10 percent higher on the Tuesday trading session, while Verizon and AT&T even saw a pop as investors anticipate the iPhone 5 in October, ahead of the holiday shopping season.
