June 21, 2011 2:44 PM EDT
IHS's iSuppli (NYSE: IHS) offered an updated 2011 forecast for the global semiconductor industry Tuesday, saying the market will expand by 7.2 percent amid increasing demand for new tablets and smart phones. The research firm had previously predicted sales in the sector to rise about 7 percent.

iSuppli sees semi sales around $325.9 billion in 2011, up from $304.1 billion in 2010. The firm expects growth for the following two years to slow to 4.8 percent and 4 percent before increasing to 8.0 percent and 7.5 percent in 2014 and 2015, respectively.

iSuppli's estimates imply an annual growth rate of about 6.3 percent.

The firm sees PCs contributing to semiconductor growth this year, making the data processing category (with growth of 6.2 percent) the third-fastest growing semiconductor application market in 2011.

An analyst at iSuppli said, "The fastest-growing semiconductor product segments in 2011 will be image sensors, NAND flash memory, light-emitting diodes, microprocessors, discrete components, sensors, and general-purpose analog integrated circuits. Collective revenue from these products is projected to rise by more than 12 percent in 2011, with complementary metal-oxide semiconductor image sensors leading all products with 36 percent growth."
