Here's Another Growth Market for Tablet PCs

June 14, 2011 1:27 PM EDT
With the rise in popularity for tablet PCs over the last year or so, one might wonder what sort of growth drivers might keep sales hot for the devices.

Fear not. Recent research from IHS (NYSE: IHS) suggests that tablets will have more applications in the automotive industry in a short time. Giving a hat-tip to smartphones, which paved the way for media consumption in autos (above and beyond what in-dash infotainment systems are capable of), tablets will offer better size and more power for use in vehicles.

Smartphones became a popular choice because of their ability to integrate with the infotainment center in cars. Smartphones can also to play videos for kids, who might be riding in the backseat, as well as run apps to keep those not driving entertained.

Currently, one of the best examples of technology that connects users with their auto is Ford (Nasdaq: F) and Microsoft's (Nasdaq: MSFT) collaborative SYNC system. The computer allows for hands-free calling, it vocally plays text messages back to you, it can stream music from your device, and more features.

IHS suggests that initial tablets will be more integrated into a cars infotainment center, which many are already familiar with. Additionally, the firm suggests that tablets will be more than likely integrated into for rear-seat entertainment, keeping the distraction away from the driver. Further, "location based services (LBS), maps, point of interest (POI), augmented reality and social networking service apps are already available," allowing those who own an Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) iPad or Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) Android-based device the ability to utilize their tablet with their car.

So, as prices come down and technology gets better for tablet PCs, look for them to show up in your local Escape, Mustang, or Tahoe soon.
