April 25, 2011 12:12 PM EDT
Gainers

  • Semiconductor HOLDRs (NYSE: SMH) up 0.11 percent to $35.81. Led by Intel (Nasdaq: INTC) today, which is up 1.51 percent, following strong earnings from the chip giant last week.

  • PowerShares DB US Dollar Index Bullish (NYSE: UUP) up 0.16 percent to $21.27. Though lower in the day, the dollar is paring losses as silver prices pullback at mid-day. Silver is nearing record prices of $50 per ounce, with April contracts at $49.105, the highest they've been since 1980.

  • iPath S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures ETN (NYSE: VXX) up 0.08 percent to $24.90. The CBOE VIX near-term index is up 8 percent today, as oil and gasoline prices keep creeping up, pinching consumer pocketbooks and stemming purchases that otherwise might be made. Though gasoline prices are higher, consumers are unusure how long the elevated prices will remain and whether they'll potentially creep higher.

Receders

  • United States Oil (NYSE: USO) down 0.45 percent to $44.37. Investors and traders taking a little off the table today, following outbreaks of violence in Syria over the weekend. The morning rally, and rebound of the U.S. dollar, is having some lock in profits as oil hit a 30 month high of $113.48 per barrels.

  • iShares FTSE China 25 Index Fund (NYSE: FXI) down 1.10 percent to $45.86. Fears that Beijing may make further moves to tighten monetary policy and record high oil prices put the temporary kibosh on recent Shanghai Composite runs, which closed 1.5 percent lower for the session.

  • iShares Dow Jones US Real Estate (NYSE: IYR) down 0.05 percent to $60.60. Real estate and homebuilders lower today as broader economic data outweigh better-than-expected new home sales numbers. Sales in March improved to 300K, from a revised 270K in February. The consensus was looking for sales of 280K in March.
