What's $70M Worth to Johnson & Johnson (JNJ)? Not as Much as You Think

April 8, 2011 12:35 PM EDT
How much is $70 million worth in Johnson & Johnson (NYSE: JNJ) stock terms?

About 0.3 percent. Maybe less.

Following an announcement that the maker of baby oil, Lactaid, and Concerta, will pay a smidge over $70 million to settle a Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA) investigation with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, the stock dropped from $59.73 to $59.55, about a 0.3 percent drop.

Johnson & Johnson boasts a market cap that currently exceeds $162 billion dollars, making the $70 million equivalent to about 0.004%.

The equivalent percentage for the average American, pre-recession, with a nice income of $44,000/year, is the purchase of (post-tax) possibly three Blu-ray DVDs, or half a car payment, or a really (read: decent) set of ear buds.

Welcome to Friday.

Shares eventually recovered, and the stock is trading up about 0.2 percent.
