Notable ETF Movers of the Day 10/28: GLD, VXX, GDX Higher; UUP, XHB, MOO Lower

Gainers

  • SPDR Gold Shares (NYSE: GLD) up 1.30% to $131.21. Gold is higher today following a drop in the U.S. dollar as inflation fears resurface. Traders are also waiting for the Fed's decision on quantitative easing next week, which a Reuters poll as the Reserve buying from $80 to $100 billion of assets per month.

  • iPath S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures ETN (NYSE: VXX) up 1.14% to $13.26. The CBOE VIX near-term index trades higher today as investors are turning to currencies and commodities ahead of the Fed decision next week. The move for the Reserve to buy bonds and flood the system with more cash is outweighing data today showing a drip in initial and continuing jobless claims.

  • Market Vectors Gold Miners ETF (NYSE: GDX) up 2.33%% to $55.95. Ripping today not only on increased gold prices, but also on the backs of Agnico-Eagle Mines Ltd. (NYSE: AEM) and Goldcorp Inc. (NYSE: GG) who both reported strong earnings yesterday. AEM is 4.5% higher and GG is also about 4.5% higher.

  • PowerShares DB US Dollar Index Bullish (NYSE: UUP) down 1.1% to $22.40. Falling on lower QE speculation, strength in European earnings.

  • SPDR S&P Homebuilders (NYSE: XHB) down 1.16% to $15.38. Ryland Group Inc. (NYSE: RYL) is the culprit here today, as the home builder reported a loss per share of $0.68 on revs of $206.5 million. Consensus was looking for a loss of $0.27 on revs of $214.0 million. Shares of Ryland are down nearly 6% this afternoon.

  • Market Vectors Agribusiness ETF (NYSE: MOO) down 0.81% to $49.91. Trading lower today, amid strong earnings out of Potash Corp. (NYSE: POT), as fears that Saskatchewan may block BHP Billiton's (NYSE: BHP) $39 billion bid for the company, though Potash has flatly rejected the offer in the past.
