Notable ETF Movers of the Day 10/26: UNG, VXX, XRT Higher; IYR, EWJ, SLX Lower

October 26, 2010 12:30 PM EDT
Gainers

  • United States Natural Gas (NYSE: UNG) up 1.59% to $5.42. After some drops over the last several days, many traders may be buying in ahead of the cooler winter weather, as November contracts are expected to expire tomorrow. Forecasters are expecting a colder-than-normal December.

  • iPath S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures ETN (NYSE: VXX) up 1.58% to $12.85. The CBOE VIX near-term is higher today, as stocks are generally mixed following solid earnings from Ford (NYSE: F), Coach (NYSE: COH), and Royal Caribbean (NYSE: RCL), among others, but the Standard & Poor's/Case-Shiller composite index declined 0.3% from July to August, offsetting a portion of positive sentiment in the markets.

  • SPDR S&P Retail (NYSE: XRT) up 0.96% to $44.05. A little mixed here today, but strength in Netflix (Nasdaq: NFLX) is helping out the cause, as the stock is closing in on its recent 52-week high of $174.94. The stock is up to its highest levels of the day right now, about 4.2% to $173.85, with a little boost given from Jim Cramer late yesterday. The Children's Place Retail Stores, Inc. (Nasdaq: PLCE) is also seeing some upside, but the stock is just trying to get back to the same level that it first saw following updated guidance on October 21.

Receders

  • iShares Dow Jones US Real Estate (NYSE: IYR) down 0.59% to $55.82. Again, the Case-Shiller Index showed a drop in home prices from July to August, and the FHFA Housing Price Index showed a 0.4% in August, but where down 2.4% from August 2009.

  • iShares MSCI Japan Index (NYSE: EWJ) down 0.98% to $10.06. The stronger yen is sending investors to the sidelines as the currency is still trading at 15-year highs to the U.S. dollar.

  • Market Vectors Steel ETF (NYSE: SLX) down 1.53% to $63.66. Steelers are seeing some dips today as Allegheny Technologies Inc. (NYSE: ATI) and U.S. Steel (NYSE: X) reported results that simply didn't live up to analyst expectations.
