Apple (AAPL) Could Target Sony (SNE) with Cash Hoard

October 26, 2010 8:32 AM EDT
What should Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) spend its $51 billion on? How about buying one of the largest electronics companies in the world?

Rumor are swirling that Apple may be interested in acquiring Sony Corp. (NYSE: SNE), prompting the largest trading volume of the Japanese company in three months.

Acquiring Sony would bring Apple into every aspect of the electronics world, including making it a major player in the video game industry with Sony's PlayStation.

In a recent interview with Bloomberg, former Apple CEO John Sculley talked about Steve Jobs' fascination with Sony, including its products and manufacturing.

"I remember (Sony co-founder) Akio Morita gave us one of the first Sony Walkmans," Sculley said. "None of us had ever seen anything like that before, because there had never been a product like that. This was 25 years ago and Steve was fascinated by it. The first thing he did was take it apart, and he looked at every single part. How the fit and finish was done, how it was built."

Other potential targets rumored include Adobe Systems Inc. (NASDAQ: ADBE) and Disney (NYSE: DIS).
