Notable ETF Movers of the Day 09/14: GLD, XRT, SMH Higher; UUP, XLF, UNG Lower

- SPDR Gold Shares (NYSE: GLD) up 2.01% to $124.07. Gold is setting record highs, north of $1270/ounce, as retail sales for August failed to inspire investors into riskier equities today. Retail sales for August were up 0.4%, topping the consensus of a 0.3% increase. Ex-auto came in stronger, at a 0.6% increase. December contracts have peaked at $1273.0/ounce today on the COMEX.
- SPDR S&P Retail (NYSE: XRT) up 2.05% to $40.35. However, that doesn't mean that investors aren't buying into the retail ETF, as companies like Footlocker (NYSE: FL) and Jos. A Bank Clothiers (Nasdaq: JOSB) are loving the news today.
- Semiconductor HOLDRs (NYSE: SMH) up 1.85% to $26.37. The semis may be getting a boost from Hewlett-Packard (NYSE: HPQ) today, as the company is finally staging a bit of a rally today after making two $1 billion+ acquisitions so far in the month of September. Shares of HPQ are 4.26% higher in late-morning trading.

- PowerShares DB US Dollar Index Bullish (NYSE: UUP) down 0.80% to $23.53. Investors are moving out of the U.S. dollar today, putting the currency to a 15-year low against the yen. The USD recently dipped to about Y82.97, its lowest level since May 1995.
- Financial Select Sector SPDR (NYSE: XLF) down 0.54% to $14.76. Financials are mixed today as Basel III was announced over the weekend, implementing higher reserve requirements among other things. Wells Fargo (NYSE: WFC) is leading the ETF lower, down about 1.4% today.
- United States Natural Gas (NYSE: UNG) down 1.82% to $6.46. Though hovering in the green earlier in the day, the nat gas ETF made a sharp turn lower at about 11:30am this morning. October contracts are $0.08 lower to $3.858/mmBtu on the COMEX today.
