Gainers

  • SPDR Gold Shares (NYSE: GLD) up 2.01% to $124.07. Gold is setting record highs, north of $1270/ounce, as retail sales for August failed to inspire investors into riskier equities today. Retail sales for August were up 0.4%, topping the consensus of a 0.3% increase. Ex-auto came in stronger, at a 0.6% increase. December contracts have peaked at $1273.0/ounce today on the COMEX.

  • SPDR S&P Retail (NYSE: XRT) up 2.05% to $40.35. However, that doesn't mean that investors aren't buying into the retail ETF, as companies like Footlocker (NYSE: FL) and Jos. A Bank Clothiers (Nasdaq: JOSB) are loving the news today.

  • Semiconductor HOLDRs (NYSE: SMH) up 1.85% to $26.37. The semis may be getting a boost from Hewlett-Packard (NYSE: HPQ) today, as the company is finally staging a bit of a rally today after making two $1 billion+ acquisitions so far in the month of September. Shares of HPQ are 4.26% higher in late-morning trading.
