Late Friday, activist investor Carl Icahn issued 13Fs for the quarter ended December 31, 2009 for himself and his hedge fund Icahn Capital. Below is a summary of his activities when comparing the fourth quarter 13F with the third quarter.
Notably, Icahn stepped up his investment in gaming software company Take-Two Interactive (Nasdaq: TTWO), although this was already known through a 13D filing. A 13D is a much more timely filing, which is required for a 5% or more holder that plans to influence management. To illustrate the time lag of the 13F versus the 13D, Icahn's latest 13D on TTWO was from Jan 28, 2010, nearly a full month after the date of the 13F but was filed two weeks before the 13F came out. Icahn has said he believes shares of TTWO are undervalued.
Also of note, Icahn raised his stake in Genzyme (Nasdaq: GENZ) and lowered his stake in Yahoo! (Nasdaq: YHOO), where he was a former board member and pushed for a merger with Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) which fell apart although eventually a search deal was agreed upon between the two.
Other news from Icahn, includes trying to get three people on the board of large holding Biogen Idec (Nasdaq: BIIB). Also, another Icahn large holding Motorola (NYSE: MOT) recently announced plans to split in two - something Icahn has argued for.
