Boeing (BA) is Making Their Dreams Happen with the 787 Dreamliner's Maiden Flight

December 15, 2009 3:52 PM EST
After built-up anticipation of their 787 Dreamliner, Boeing (NYSE: BA) saw the maiden voyage off at about 1:27pm EST today, delayed by less than ideal weather.

The jumbo, flanked by two support planes, looked smooth on takeoff and is scheduled to test for around four hours. The plane won't go above 15,000 on this flight and is lightly fueled. It will then land at Boeing Field, 35 miles south of Seattle, WA.

Expectations were high for the program, which is now going into about seven years, being approved in 2003 as the 7E7. Though its burned a lot of cash in that time, there are approximately 840 orders for the plane, which is expected to cost anywhere from $146 - $167 million each, for a total consideration of about $122 billion.

Japan's Niippon Airways made their first order for 50 787's in 2004.

Shares of BA are trading down 0.95% to $55.52, with a little positive spike happening from 12:20 to 1:00pm, to $56.37, and hanging below that mark for the rest of the session so far.
