November 1, 2016 2:18 PM EDT

Donations will be made to the American Red Cross, North Carolina Community Foundation, and The Community Foundation for Northeast Florida

LOUISVILLE, Ky.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- The Humana Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Humana Inc. (NYSE: HUM), is announcing $115,000 in grants to three nonprofit organizations providing support to those affected by Hurricane Matthew.

The American Red Cross is receiving a gift of $50,000 from the Humana Foundation to address immediate relief of the southeast region impacted by Hurricane Matthew, especially North Carolina. The Humana Foundation is also providing a $40,000 grant to the North Carolina Community Foundation and $25,000 to The Community Foundation for Northeast Florida. Both community foundation grants address intermediate and long-term needs of those affected by the disaster.

“We were saddened to see the devastating impact of Hurricane Matthew and our hearts go out to those affected,” said Virginia Kelly Judd, executive director of the Humana Foundation. “The Humana Foundation honors the generosity and commitment of volunteers and relief agencies and is delighted to support the important efforts of the American Red Cross, North Carolina Community Foundation, and The Community Foundation for Northeast Florida to assist those in need. We hope these gifts will help people deal with the immediate and ongoing needs left by this tragedy.”

According to the Associated Press, Hurricane Matthew impaired or destroyed more than one million structures, forced businesses to close, and put thousands temporarily out of work. It is estimated by Goldman Sachs that the storm resulted in $10 billion in damages.

“We deeply appreciate the Humana Foundation stepping forward to address the substantive issues created by Hurricane Matthew in Northeast Florida,” said Nina Waters, president of The Community Foundation for Northeast Florida. “It is particularly meaningful that the Humana Foundation has the foresight to invest in the longer term needs resulting from the destructive event, since those are often overlooked after the initial crisis response.”

“We want to thank the Humana Foundation for such a generous gift to the North Carolina Community Foundation’s Disaster Relief Fund,” said Jennifer Tolle Whiteside, NCCF CEO and president. “The Humana Foundation is well regarded for strategic, thoughtful grant making, and we appreciate that they recognize the value of our disaster relief approach to focus on unmet needs.”
