Multi-year agreement helps to keep patient card information secure across ZirMed’s network

ATLANTA--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Elavon, a leading global payments provider and subsidiary of U.S. Bancorp (NYSE: USB), today announced that it is now the preferred processing partner for ZirMed, a leading provider of cloud-based revenue cycle management solutions for the healthcare industry.

The new, multi-year agreement between Elavon and ZirMed advances their existing relationship by extending EMV (Europay, MasterCard and Visa) chip technology and Point-to-Point Encryption (P2PE) capabilities for ZirMed’s patient payment software solutions. Elavon's Simplify suite, which provides a multi-layered approach to payment security, was a major factor in ZirMed’s decision to make Elavon its preferred processor.

“Healthcare providers have been sensitized to employing the utmost security and privacy safeguards to protect patient health information,” said Jim Lacy, ZirMed CFO and general counsel. “Patient financial data is no different and recent national efforts around EMV and point-to-point encryption have highlighted provider’s requirement for secure patient payment solutions. ZirMed focuses on getting providers paid, and our partnership with Elavon ensures the most competitive rates and highest security.”

Eight out of 10 of the largest hacks into any type of healthcare provider occurred last year, according to the U.S. Dept. of Health & Human Services. Ponemon Institute, which conducts independent research on privacy, data protection and information security policy, reported that more than 90 percent of healthcare providers experienced at least one breach from 2013 to 2015. In 20 percent of the instances, payment details were stolen, reinforcing that any time a breach occurs, payment data is at risk.

Elavon’s Simplify solution enables ZirMed’s software to accept EMV chip cards, mobile wallets (including Apple Pay™, Android Pay™ and Samsung Pay) and older magnetic stripe cards, and immediately encrypts and secures card data for in-person payments.

"As one of the nation’s largest healthcare-focused processors, our clients look to us to bring simple, secure and compliant payments processing," Lacy added. "Elavon’s technology platform makes it quick and easy for our developers to enable pre-certified EMV transactions."

ZirMed also will make use of Elavon's Fusebox secure gateway for decrypting payment card data, while supporting integrated token technology for eCommerce and mCommerce transactions. This means that whether patients pay with their smart phones or online, they will be better protected with multiple layers of security.

Jana Franks, senior vice president and general manager for Elavon’s healthcare business, said, “Our healthcare team is heavily invested in keeping payments processing secure to help healthcare providers focus on what they do best – patient care. Our strategic relationship with ZirMed helps us do that, and marries the expertise of our dedicated healthcare implementation teams with industry-leading customer service and technical support.”
