According to Bloomberg, Nitsana Darshan-Leitner, an Israeli attorney has filed suit against Facebook (NASDAQ: FB) for $1 billion in damages in the names of 5 families that are alleging it allowed the Palestinian militant Hamas group to use it as a medium to carry out attacks that killed four Americans and wounded one in Israel, the West Bank and Jerusalem. The lawsuit claims Facebook "knowingly provided material support and resources to Hamas in the form of Facebook’s online social network platform and communication services”.
This comes after Google (NASDAQ: GOOGL), Twitter (NASDAQ: TWTR) and Facebook were sued by the father of a victim in the Paris terrorist attack last November. That lawsuit claims the companies “knowingly permitted” the Islamic State group to recruit members, raise money and spread “extremist propaganda” via their social-media services.
All three companies have cited their policies against extremist material but as American multinationals increasingly become the targets of federal and personal lawsuits, ongoing legal expenses may move from consideration as a one time costs to operating expenses.
