SAN DIEGO, June 14, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Barbara Morris, 87- year old author of The Expert's Guide To Strut Your Stuff: How Boomers And New Retirees Can Stay Youthful Longer And Live The Life They Really Want, says that of 80% of how well women age is determined by lifestyle choices made over time; only 20 percent is genetically determined.

Ms. Morris explains in her book that early in the aging process women overlook the reality that while youth is free, it's a short-term loan. However, many benefits of youth can be retained with on-going determination and effort relating to diet, exercise, mindset and lifestyle. The magic words are "on-going determination and effort" -- day in and day out over the years that becomes a daily lifestyle. The payoff for that effort are lasting youthful attributes thought to be impossible to keep as aging continues.

The hurdle to overcome, says Ms. Morris, is the traditional leisure-oriented retirement mindset and lifestyle that has gradually evolved since retirement became institutionalized in the 1930s. Unfortunately, that lifestyle and mindset, if adopted by retirees, accepts the dictates of stereotypical misperceptions, beliefs, and expectations about aging, and is kept alive through tradition -- handed down from one generation to another without question -- and supported by prevailing set in stone outdated cultural norms.

Ms. Morris says women who want to control their physical appearance as they age should make the effort not only to avoid the traditional mindset and lifestyle, but also, not allow awareness of their chronological age to rule or ruin the lives.

"Our culture places enormous significance on chronological age. Older women are expected to adopt assigned ways of thinking, behaving and believing for a given age and it takes courage to break free from age-defined cultural and traditional barriers and instead, be who they want to be and live how they want to live. I encourage boomer and older women to read my book for tips and strategies to escape horse and buggy traditional constraints that cause older women to experience premature decline. "
