Service Provider Core Router Market Grows Double Digits in 1Q16, According to Dell'Oro Group

REDWOOD CITY, Calif., June 6, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- A recently published report from Dell'Oro Group, the trusted source for market information about the telecommunications, networks, and data center IT industries, shows the worldwide Service Provider (SP) Core Router market grew in double digits in 1Q16, the fifth consecutive quarter of year-over-year growth. Demand for Huawei routers drove the market with China sales, narrowly missing a company record set the preceding quarter.

"The SP Core Router market grew 14 percent year-over-year in the quarter as SPs continued to deploy 100 GE ports in their networks. 100 GE port shipments on routers more than doubled versus the first quarter of 2015, with increases from all of the major core router vendors. Higher capacity line cards and improved optics have led to higher port densities, convincing SPs to upgrade their networks," said Alam Tamboli, Senior Analyst at Dell'Oro Group. "Huawei was the primary beneficiary this quarter. Their core router revenue grew approximately 80 percent versus a year ago.  Huawei was able to grow its revenue in recent quarters in large part due to a massive new deployment for a data center interconnect network by China Telecom," Tamboli added.

In rank order, Cisco Systems, Juniper Networks, Huawei Technologies, and Nokia (formerly Alcatel-Lucent) were the market share leaders in the SP Core Router market, accounting for over 97 percent of revenue in 1Q16.
