Skybox Datacenters Breaks Ground on Large Wholesale Data Center in Plano Market

March 16, 2016 7:00 AM EDT

DALLAS, March 16, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Skybox Datacenters has commenced construction on Skybox Legacy, a multi-phase, 21-acre campus located in the prestigious Legacy submarket of Plano, Texas.  The first phase of this expansive development is a 150,000-square-foot, 25-megawatt, purpose-built data center that will be delivered in October of 2016.

Skybox Legacy will benefit from access to Dallas's robust fiber-optic backbone due to its proximity to multiple data centers and 19 million square feet of Class A office space, making it ideal for local and national users.  The campus's immediate access to the Dallas North Tollway, Sam Rayburn Tollway and Highway 289 provides easy access to DFW International Airport, Dallas Love Field Airport, all northern Dallas office submarkets and Dallas's central business district.

"The recent announcements of major corporate arrivals like Toyota, Liberty Mutual, FedEx Office, Fannie Mae, JP Morgan Chase and expansions of Pizza Hut, Capital One, and Nokia will bring more than 18,000 jobs in the next few years," City of Plano Mayor Harry LaRosiliere said.  "This has a multiplier effect and has attracted a major data center provider like Skybox to Plano's Legacy Business Park.  We look forward to their addition in our community."

The first phase of the project, Skybox Legacy One, will offer initial power delivery of 25 megawatts, dual-fed from two separate substations located at Communications & Tennyson Parkways, with campus expansion capacity of up to 350,000 SF and 60-megawatts in one or more facilities. Power is delivered to the campus via dual, underground concrete-encased duct banks from two independent and geographically diverse Oncor substations.

"The demand for large data center environments continues to grow here in North Texas at a pace greater than the market can supply," Curt Holcomb, Executive Vice President at Jones Lang LaSalle's Data Center Solutions practice, stated. "We believe users see the value in space that is readily available when they are comparing their options against other markets nationally.  Texas continues to benefit from our ability to build quickly when compared against other Tier-1 markets."

Data halls within the facility can be completely column-free with adjacent dedicated power and cooling distribution galleries close to the server loads.  Legacy One will also be one of the only data centers in Texas that qualifies for House Bill 1223, which can provide industry-leading data center sales and use tax abatements for large data center users across their servers, power, infrastructure and operations.

Rob Morris, Managing Partner at Skybox Datacenters, added, "We believe there is incredible untapped potential when it comes to Texas, House Bill 1223 and large purpose-built data centers.  Skybox is excited about the possibilities here for large users, integrators and cloud providers that want to operate in one of the most populous states in the country while maintaining an extremely low and nationally competitive total cost of operations."

Skybox Legacy is located on an extremely secure site situated well above the 100 and 500-year flood zones. The facility is designed to a LEED Silver standard and features a six-inch concrete roof deck designed to withstand 190-mph winds.  The combination of a convenient and secure location, hardened structure and intelligent expansion provides clients a total value proposition for large-scale wholesale data centers, which is unique to Texas.

Groundbreaking ceremonies will be held on March 29th at the campus location on 6800 Communications Parkway, Plano, TX at 10:30a.m. in the morning, with lunch served shortly afterwards.
